What is the best gaming laptop under $1500

January 19, 2012 5:26 PM PST

I'd ideally like to play WoW full settings and every other game I can get my hands on. I know most suggest alienware, but those seem overpriced for the brand. Any other suggestions? Not looking for a desktop. Thanks in advance everyone.

While the above G74SX is 1 model, I'd recommend BTOTech.com if you'd want to get a G74SX and get some customization with it. I ended up spending about $1700, but that was with an additional 2yr accidental warranty that added on $150 to it, so it'd be a little over the 1500 you're wanting to spend, but i guarantee it's well worth it. I've been playing WoW on ultra settings on DX11, Skyrim on Ultra settings, and BF3 on ultra settings and I've had no hiccups or any other kind of lag during gameplay. :D

Going to have to agree with this, customer brought one of these in for repair and it is a MONSTER. It's surprisingly light weight as well! which is always a bonus.

While most Alienware products are severely overpriced, this one's actually very worthwhile. 8 gigs of RAM, i7 GPU, HD 3000 video card. For its price it's actually pretty fucking amazing.

Asus is a brand you can rely on for decent performance and while Alienware is overpriced, there is a reason for it. They are fast, compact, and have the best performance. You have the budget for it, I'd go with one of the Alienware.

Alienwares ARE overpriced, it's true. But their laptops do offer exceptional performance. From personal experience.

Yeah, definitely do NOT go with Alienware. It's like buying a Mac just because of Apple's design and hype. There's plenty of top notch Gaming Laptops out there that are much cheaper. Companies like Asus and Acer provide excellent gaming laptops for a faction of the price of an Alienware. Try learning about laptop specs and then compare. You'll quickly find out that paying for a logo is ridiculous

I really would steer away from a "gaming laptop" if I were you. I have used several and my experience has always been that after about 30 minutes to an hour of actual gaming use, the laptop gets incredibly hot and performance is drastically reduced, no matter how much money you put into the laptop. If you still want one though, I would also recommend an Asus laptop like Zach did. The model he suggests is a good one. Make sure to stay away from Alienware. I own one of their laptops.... It is good for a paperweight I guess. Their products die fast and their tech support is terrible.

Here is a link to the ASUS G74SX. You can see various levels of customization, and the price for each:

Browse around the laptops on that site. Malibal laptops are based upon clevo technology, and are exceptional gaming powerhouses for being laptops. I love my lotus, and I've never been happier, and I spent under 1500. You get your i7 2600 series, 8 gigs of ddr3, a gtx 560m, 500gb hard drive, and 1080p all in a 15.6inch package (if you go with the lotus).

I've heard some pretty darn good things about this Asus. I understand what these other gentlemen are saying about watching out for "gaming" laptops because it's easy to get ripped off and yeah, they can run hot occasionally. But they have done a good job with this thing, and I think you will find it useful for non-gaming activities as well.
I like that it's not overwhelmingly huge. When you get up to 17, 18 inches it seems to me like you should just get a desktop, because the portability aspect is gone.
Awesome specs inside: 2.2 GHz Intel i-7 2670QM Quad Core processor, 12 GB DIMM, 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive, Nvidia GTX 560M 2GB GDDR5.... definitely can handle some serious WOWing.
